Ultimate Houston & Galveston Playbook for Visiting Fútbol Fans

Houston will serve as a World Cup host city, welcoming international fans for seven matches. For visitors attending games—or extending their stay—the Houston area offers a wide range of activities beyond the stadium, including diverse dining, waterfront attractions, and access to the Texas Gulf Coast. This guide outlines key areas to explore in Houston and nearby Galveston to help fans plan their time before and between matches.

Explore Options Between Matches

Between matches, visitors will find many things to do near Houston. One option for organizing activities across multiple days is the Weekend Adventure Pass, which provides access to attractions in both Houston and Galveston.

The pass includes three-day ride admission to Kemah Boardwalk, Downtown Aquarium, and the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier. These attractions are located across the metro area and Gulf Coast, making them suitable for short trips between matches or as part of a broader Houston-area itinerary.

Where to Stay

Houston offers lodging options ranging from downtown hotels to resort properties along the Gulf Coast. Choosing the right place to stay depends on your preferred location, nearby attractions, and the type of experience you’re looking for.

Downtown Houston provides access to NRG Stadium (referred to as “Houston Stadium” during the World Cup) and nearby fan experiences. Staying downtown places visitors near transportation routes and central districts, including hotels such as The Westin Houston Downtown, which is located near Daikin Park.

Galveston Island, located approximately 50 miles south of Houston, offers coastal lodging options along the Gulf. Hotels such as The San Luis Resort, Hilton Galveston Island Resort, Holiday Inn Resort Galveston, the Boardwalk Inn at Kemah Boardwalk, and Harbor House Hotel & Marina at Pier 21 provide a range of waterfront stays often chosen by visitors planning time on the island or along the coast.

Where to Dine

Houston is known for its diverse food scene, and visitors will find a wide range of restaurants near Houston featuring flavors from around the world. That culinary diversity continues into Galveston, where fresh seafood and Gulf views are common features of many local restaurants.

Near Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier, dining options include Rainforest Café & River Adventure Ride,  which combines a themed restaurant with an on‑site attraction, and Fish Tales, located across the street along Seawall Boulevard, which offers seafood-focused menus and beachfront seating.

Additional dining options in the Galveston area include Grotto, Joe’s Crab Shack, Willie G’s, Saltgrass Steakhouse, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., Landry’s Seafood House, and Fisherman’s Wharf, providing a mix of casual and full‑service restaurant styles.

Where to Shop

Shopping near Houston includes coastal retail areas such as Galveston’s Historic Strand District, located south of the city and accessible as a day trip. The district is a walkable area featuring boutiques, galleries, souvenir shops, and specialty retailers commonly visited by travelers exploring the region.

Visitors can also shop at The San Luis Resort in Galveston, which offers a selection of resort wear, gifts, and curated specialty items, providing a more upscale shopping experience along the coast.

At Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier, on-site retail options include Pelican’s Bag Gifts & Sundries, which carries apparel, themed merchandise, and beach-related novelty items, as well as Candy Box, which offers packaged sweets and confections. These retail locations are situated within the Pier area and are accessible while visiting attractions along the Galveston Seawall.
